Strong Storms Well North Chance For Thunderstorms Tonight Sunshine Saturday Clouds Sunday

We do have a working tornado watch in the upper Hudson Valley in New York State but we don not anticipate a widespread severe thunderstorm watch being issued for our area. After a warm and somewhat humid day (for this time of year) loaded with sunshine and highs in the 80s, a cold front is approaching now with showers and thunderstorms ahead of it as the radars below suggest.

The main line is well north in upstate NY and we have already seen numerous severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings this evening across Upstate NY along I-90. To the south and over our area a few renegade scattered thunderstorms have developed and there is the risk for an isolated severe thunderstorm this evening. The line to the north will move southeast and after sunset will weaken. By the time the line reaches here, only some shower and a rumble or two of thunder will remain.

All of this leads to a rather nice day on Saturday with sunshine though there might be some clouds early and again late in the day. Highs should be in the slightly cooler 70s. High pressure slowly builds in from Eastern Canada as tonight’s cold front stalls across the Middle Atlantic states.

Clouds will return for sure on Sunday with a southeast flow developing. Except for a passing brief isolated shower, Sunday should be dry. Early next week is complicated with low pressure and a cold front coming in from the Ohio Valley and gradually redeveloping in the Mid Atlantic States. You also have what will likely be a subtropical storm that develops off the Florida coast tonight or Saturday and heads northeastward. Weather models seem to suggest a track tucked in closer to the coast however hurricane tracking models take a mostly offshore route.

The subtropical system only indirectly impacts our weather in that it creates a strong onshore flow here Monday with rain coming in Monday night through Tuesday and possibly beyond that. The onshore flow will be strong enough to produce coastal flooding and we could have to deal with on and off rain through much of next week.

The subtropical system is getting its strength from a deep trough diving into the east. It will either kick the low away to the northeast leaving the non tropical low behind or the non tropical low will absorb it. Either way it leads to unsettled weather issues beyond midweek until the upper trough pulls away to the northeast. It should do so in time for the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
