Spring Is Here Sunshine Nice Weekend Onshore Flow Begins Next Week

The long winter is over now both meteorologically, astronomically and in practical reality. Spring begins today and it is doing so the way it usually does. It is a bit on the chilly side today as colder air from Eastern Canada is over the Northeast and Mid Atlantic states but it is not another one of those harsh cold air masses. We have lots of sunshine to enjoy today. The satellite shows mostly clear skies in much of the Northeast and Middle Atlantic states.

Radars are nice and quiet too and will remain so through the weekend. Temperatures this afternoon witll be in the 50s for highs. Tonight we head down into the upper 20s to mid 30s under clear skies!

Let’s move on to Sunday where we will see plenty of sunshine and temperatures will respond by reaching into the 60s just about everywhere. Local sea breezes will develop along south and east facing shorelines but they will be confined to those coastal areas only and not spread inland.

Spring to me is the worst season of the year particularly through mid May. This is due to the cold ocean and that plays havoc on temperatures as well as sky conditions. This is a time of year in the Northeast that days of low clouds are common. I refer to these as gloom and doom days or gloom and doom type weather. It stays cloudy and raw all day with an ocean wind but usually those days don’t have much if any precipitation other than some patchy drizzle.

I’m going to be cautiously optimistic for Monday through Wednesday but there are issues. The position of the high on the GFS suggests that the onshore flow will be a bigger problem as you head south into Virginia and the Carolinas and less of an issue further north. The wind flow will be off the ocean so this suggest temperatures inland will be a little warm than along the coast. Monday’s highs will be in the mid 50s to lower 60s from east to west. Tuesday we could see upper 50s and lower 60s for most places. More clouds on Wednesday will likely mean 50s coast and 60s inland.

On the other hand, some of the models including the NAM and the European show a more complex outlook for next week with this developing onshore flow and low pressure to the south. While the rain with this offshore low stays offshore, this suggests cloud issues for Tuesday and Wednesday especially along the coast. I would not right a blank check for sunshine straight through the middle of next week with this type of set up. The next weather system of any importance will be Thursday. Models have backed off on the idea of something coming with rain for Tuesday night into Wednesday so we will keep it rain free until then.
