High Wind Watch is up for Sunday morning but along with the high winds is the possibility of some snow squalls that could whiten up the ground in spots or even leave an inch or so in some places. The best chances for this would be in Northeastern Pennsylvania, Northern New Jersey north of route 80 and just inland of the coast across the Hudson Valley and into Connecticut. Actually it is quite interesting how strong this upper feature is that is coming down out of Canada. The surface storm is forming literally in our back yard. If it were a little further south we might have been looking at a surprise Sunday morning. But I think that it will just be a hair too far north to do that. Just bear in mind that the strength of the upper system is impressive enough that somebody might wind up with a short quick burst.
Snow Squalls High Winds Sunday Morning Snowfall Forecast Map
My guess is that this National Weather Service snowfall forecast map for Sunday morning is probably a fair representation of what is going to happen. This should occur between 4 am and 8am. It even has Long Island under a coating to an inch and this is because of the track of the upper low and the surface storm begin just to the east. If it happens it will be quick. The snow area has been shifted a little further south from yesterday to reflect a slight southward shift in the track of the surface storm by all the weather models except for the GFS model which has the surface low further north. The Euro model and Nam model among others pretty much have the same idea.
Snow Squalls High Winds Sunday Morning Nam Model 5am Sunday
This Nam model forecast map for 5am Sunday is right around the time the winds will be picking up as the pressure gradient south and west of the surface low tightens up rapidly. 50 mph wind gusts will be common Sunday morning regardless of how much if any snow falls.
Snow Squalls High Winds Sunday Morning Wind Gust Forecast 8am Sunday
Winds by late Sunday afternoon and Sunday night will begin to drop off as the storm pulls away and the pressure gradient relaxes. Cold weather continues into next week and there is another threat for some snow late Monday afternoon and Monday night.
