Yesterday’s coastal storm is long gone but not that far away this as it sits near Nova Scotia. To the west of this is a very strong upper air storm over the Eastern Great Lakes that will be moving virtually overhead today. This is going to create a very cold unstable atmosphere much like what happens in the summer time. While we are starting the day off with sunshine, clouds will be developing and later this afternoon and evening there will be some snow showers and even a few heavier snow squalls. Visibility will be reduced in these squalls, sometimes briefly to near zero and a quick coating of snow is possible. Much like a summer shower or thunderstorm, it will be short lived and last for only a handful of minutes.

The rotation of yesterday’s coastal storm continues to spin snow back across Northern New England and upstate NY on the radars today. Also some lake effect snows are going on as well and look for this activity to increase as the day wears on. At least for now local radars are quiet.

Once the upper air disturbance goes through tonight, the atmosphere stabilizes and we will see skies clear tonight. Then we do it all over again tomorrow with another upper air disturbance swinging by with clouds developing and a few showers. Highs both days will be just into the 40s.  Friday things should calm down enough for a mix of sun and clouds with highs again just into the 40s. The weekend looks good overall with sunshine for Saturday Saint Patrick’s Day and Sunday with highs in the 40s. In fact Sunday we could reach above 50 before a cold front moves through with little fanfare other than a wind shift and a turn to colder weather next week.

Weather models are bringing out another storm across the Plains and Ohio Valley that will redevelop off our coastline Tuesday and that means a threat for another storm with snow or rain. Strength and impact are highly uncertain at this point but the chess pieces are there again. How they arrange themselves remains to be seen. In the meantime we have relatively calm weather with a few minor hiccups today and tomorrow and a decent though not exactly a warm weekend ahead of us. Enjoy the calmness and we will explore what models are doing for next week late today.
