Snow Friday Night Ahead of Bitter Cold Strong Winds Weekend

The so called warm up continues today, sort of. We are going to be actually a little lower today than yesterday as a slightly colder air mass comes in. Clouds will be around today along with sunshine but highs today will be in the upper 20s to around 30 degrees. We don’t expect anything to happen today. Radars are nice and quiet. However we are priming up the atmosphere for the arrival of bitter cold air for the weekend. Lows tonight under partially clear skies will be in the teens warmer urban areas and along the coast with single digits inland.

SATELLITE WITH LIGHTNING STRIKES

WEATHER RADAR

Friday we will see increasing clouds. High temperatures will in the upper 20s to a few lower 30s. An arctic cold front will be approaching but we do not expect to see any snow from this system during the daytime Friday. Some snow of varying intensities, mostly light, will develop later Friday night and continue into early Saturday morning as the front passes.

The arctic front will pass through Friday evening and we will be see a developing low well offshore. A strong upper trough will continue to produce light snow into early Saturday and right now we think accumulations will be light, on the order of a coating to an inch or so in most places. At most some isolated areas could pick up 2 inches but that would be the maximum since the coastal low is well out to the east.

The high temperatures for Saturday will be reached shortly after midnight and by Saturday morning, temperatures will be in the teens to around 20. Snow ends, winds increase and become strong during Saturday afternoon and evening, gusting to 30 to 40 mph at times. Temperatures Saturday will likely settle in the teens and hold there before dropping sharply Saturday night. By Sunday morning under clear skies, lows will be in the low to mid single digits in warmer urban areas and along the coast, but inland we will see many areas go below zero.

Sunday will be very cold with some sunshine. Gusty winds will start the day but the winds will begin to ease as the day wears on. Highs Sunday will be in the teens. Monday we should be back into the 20s after a very cold start to the day in the single digits to low teens. Moderating temperatures will be the general trend for next week with no major storms on the horizon anytime soon.
