Snow Forecasts 3 to 5 Inches In Elevated Areas

Based on the latest radars which are loaded with precipitation and an expansion of the areas already seeing snow, and the latest short range models, It seems to me that some of the higher elevations in Northwest New Jersey and parts of the Hudson Valley could see 3 to 5 inches of heavy wet snow before it ends late tonight. The latest HRRR model below assumes a 10-1 ration of rain to snow which I think is too high. So I am basically cutting this back by a third. Sleet has been reported along the Jersey shore and parts of Long Island as well which is telling me that dynamic cooling is taking place at a faster pace.

The radars are also loaded with precipitation that is moving northeastward and shows no signs of diminishing. Low pressure is developing off the Carolina coast and will begin to move slowly east northeastward overnight and on Wednesday.

The maps below are the National Weather Service forecast snow maps with the most likely snowfall prediction. They have been adjusted somewhat higher in some places but check the time stamp. These maps as of 7pm have not been updated. They will update automatically so check back later to see new forecasts.

Weather conditions will improve later tonight as all of this moisture moves away to the east. We should see clouds giving way to some breaks of sun on Wednesday before a cold front arrives on Thursday with a few rain or snow showers. After that front passes it will turn much colder for Friday and the weekend with temperatures not out of the 30s for highs and nights down in the upper teens to low 20s into Sunday.
