Our storm system is now offshore and slowly pulling away to the northeast however the flat nature of the wave has us struggling for improving weather conditions today. Lots of clouds remain as do the rather raw conditions. We will see winds gradually bend around to the north and then the northwest late today and tonight and that should to facilitate some clearing of skies. We may have to wait until tonight for that to happen area wide. Temperatures today from NYC east will stay in the 40s while areas to the west and southwest might manage getting back into the 50s this afternoon.

Slightly colder air comes back in tonight and as skies clear and winds drop off this will probably create some frosts and freezes around parts of the area. Various frost advisories and freeze watches and warnings are up as the map above shows. Lows by Sunday morning will be mostly in the 30s with temperatures near or slightly below freezing in the coldest spots.

On to Sunday which is shaping up to be a decent day with sunshine to start though clouds will arrive later in the day. We will see highs reach the 60s in most places and even the coast could see highs reach 60 or better if we get enough sun and the sea breeze is kept at bay.

Sunday night we have a rather complex scenario setting up with a cold front arriving. To the south we have low pressure developing across the Gulf States what will create a widespread area of severe weather Sunday into Sunday night. That low will turn northeast and try to head up the coast.

The unusually strong jet stream pattern across the Eastern US will take the southern system out to sea Sunday night and Monday but it might come close enough to graze coastal areas with some rain Sunday night into Monday morning. Inland areas will likely just see lots of clouds until the low goes by Monday afternoon. Temperatures Monday will be mostly in the 50s area wide except where it rains in which case temperatures in those coastal areas from New Jersey to Southern New England will settle in the 40s.

The busy pattern continues on Tuesday. Note on the gfs loop above there is a system in the Northern Lakes. That is part of the strong trough in the jet stream that is dropping southeastward from Canada. This will be moving through the Northeast on Tuesday and there could be some showers and thunderstorms with this front and trough as it goes by. In fact it wouldn’t shock me at all if we wind up seeing the Storm Prediction Center start talking about a marginal risk for severe weather with this system. Highs Tuesday will reach the 60s.

What follows that cold front on Tuesday is a dry Wednesday and then another storm system marches east from the Southern Plains to the East Coast with raw rainy conditions Thursday and possible into Friday as well. A break on Saturday and then guess what? Another system follows for later Sunday into Monday! There is no rest for the weary and during a time when we are confined in our homes it would be nice if we had a decent weather pattern with sunny days. Sadly that is not to be.
