Severe Weather Tropical Low And The Weekend Forecast

After a very warm and very humid day thunderstorms are the story this evening. Severe Thunderstorm Watches are up across Northeast Pennsylvania, Northwest New Jersey, the Lower Hudson Valley to just south of Route 84 and than east across Northwest Connecticut. Looking at the satellite and radar views thunderstorms have not advanced out of Pennsylvania yet but they are about to. They will begin to move across the watch area in the next several hours and then along the coast probably around 10 or 11pm.

Strong gusty winds of 50 mph or more in some severe cells is the primary threat but there is a 2% area of tornado risk for Northeast Pennsylvania/Northwest New Jersey north and east. I don’t expect additional watches to be added when the current watches expire later this evening. Thunderstorms will come off their peak strength but some should hold on as they reach the coast.

The front reaches the coast and stalls as a high builds in New England and Eastern Canada setting up an onshore flow for Thursday and Friday. This is actually a good thing because if the front were to stall to our west, the developing low off the Southeast Coast would have a pathway to move northward.

Instead the pathway is southwest to northeast and the coastal low will move north to off the North Carolina coast and then it should turn to the right. Even if this were to develop into a tropical depression or a tropical storm, the outcome is the same. So Thursday we will have clouds and some lingering showers around especially in the morning. Friday we will also see clouds around with highs both days in the 70s. That should leave us with a nice warm last weekend of the summer with some sunshine for Saturday and Sunday. Highs both days will reach into the 80s. The humidity will still be up there but not oppressive and there is little if any chance for a shower or thunderstorm through the weekend! Then it is on to the Autumn season next week!
