Severe Weather Risks Late Today & Tonnight
Hurricane Lee Looks Bound for Atlantic Canada
The last 2 days we have seen potent and in some cases vicious thunderstorms over parts of the interior Northeast and today is the third day in a row the Storm Prediction Center has an area of marginal to slight risk from the Mid Atlantic northeastward to New England. We have a stalled front to the west with an upper trough and it won’t be moving much today and tonight. This will set off heavy thunderstorms late today.
The Weather Prediction Center is also showing a “slight” risk for localized flash flooding from these thunderstorms since they seem to be hitting the same areas day after day. Slight risk means a 15 to 40 percent chance of thunderstorms capeable of producing flash flooding.
Ahead of all this we are in a steam bath of tropical breaks of sunshine, dew points in the 70s and enough daytime heating to feed into these thunderstorms as the radars begin to get active this afternoon and evening. Temperatures this afternoon will reach the middle to upper 80s and it will be another day of extreme discomfort given the high relative humidities. The main threat time for storms will be from 2pm to 10pm.

WEATHER RADAR
Not much changes tonight or Sunday. Showers and thunderstorms will mostly die out overnight though there could always be some stray downpours around. Most lows Sunday morning will be in the upper 60s to mid 70s. Sunday we will see the cold front lying right along the coast and this will set off downpours and thunderstorms again in the afternoon and evening. Sunday highs will be in the upper 70s and lower 80s though the humidity will again be very high.
We may catch a litte bit of a break Monday as the frontal boundary weakens and the trough also weakens out however there is still the chance for scattered showers and some thunderstorms, mostly inland Monday afternoon and evening. Monday highs will be in the upper 70s and lower 80s
Moving through next week Hurricane Lee appears on the lower right corner of the GFS forecast model loop. We also have 2 cold fronts that will be moving through. The first will be late Tuesday and with that we could see some showers and thunderstorms. The second cold front is the more important one because that will produce showers and thunderstorms as it moves through Wednesday. It also will move offshore and create an alley for Hurricane Lee to move along. The GFS model turns Lee northward passing between the Carolinas and Bermuda Friday morning and then heads toward Atlantic Canada. Other models turn Lee to the right missing Atlantic Canada but the GFS seems to be the most consistent of the bunch and matches up with the National Hurricane Center’s Hurricane tracking models much better than the others. Rough surf, rip tides, and higher than normal tides will begin later Sunday and last all of next week. There is a chance that the western edge of Lee will clip Eastern New England and downeast Maine with heavy rains next Friday night into early Saturday but there is still enough uncertainty about this that we will wait until early next week to see what exactly is going to happen with Hurricane Lee.
