Severe Weather Risks Late In the Day

Monday Through Wednesday Low Humidity & Sunshine

Very warm humid air has returned to the Northeast but it will only be for one day as a new dry air mass is about to arrive. Ahead of it today we have some work to do including the risk for thunderstorms and severe weather. The Storm Prediction Center is indicating a slight risk for severe thunderstorms, or at least at 15 percent chance, covering areas from Northeast Pennsylvania, Northern New Jersey, north and east into Upstate NY and much of New England. Lower chances for isolated severe thunderstorms cover just about all of Pennsylvania, Central and Southern New Jersey southward into Delaware, Maryland and Virginia.

SATELLITE WITH LIGHTNING STRIKES

WEATHER RADAR

We will be watching radars for the development of thunderstorms from midday though the afternoon to the west and north of the coast. These storms will be the kind that move along so the larger risk will be from gusty winds rather than flash flooding and heavy rain though there can always be a storm that decides to pour down rain and cause flooding issues.

As far as temperatures go it will mid to upper 80s for highs with dew points back near or above 70. Storms will go by and should clear the coast this evening. Then we will see improving weather conditions as skies clear. More importantly, we will see humidity levels drop overnight as a new air mass builds into Eastern Canada and the Northeast for the first part of the new work week.

This dry air mass has some staying power so we will see low humidity and sunshine probably though at least part of Wednesday. Eventually we will see the high move out later this week and that will mean that temperatures will start to climb and humidity levels will start to climb as well. We do however see that the entire work week however will be free of any shower or thunderstorm activity.

Monday brings plenty of sun, a nice northwest breeze and highs in the low to mid 80s. By Tuesday morning, temperatures will be down in the 60s with many inland areas north and northwest of the coast and warmer urban areas in the 50s. Tuesday looks to be partly to mostly sunny and once again highs will be in a range of 80 to 85 degrees. Dew points will be in the very comfortable 50s with even some 40s in rural areas.

We will hold on to reasonable dew points and humidity levels for much of Wednesday but you can expect the dry high pressure to move out to the east and south. That will bring higher temperatures and higher humidity for Thursday and Friday. In fact we are headed back into the low and middle 90s by the time we reach the end of the week and into next weekend. Wednesday highs will be in the 80s. Thursday highs will reach the upper 80s to some lower 90s in hot spots.
