Severe Weather Risk Today Heatwave Begins Friday 100 Sunday?

The warm front marking the leading edge of a very humid and a very hot air mass continues to make northward progress this morning. We have seen some heavy downpours and thunderstorms this morning. The heaviest downpours have moved out of the Hudson Valley and Northwest New Jersey and they continue in Connecticut and Long Island for a bit longer. Also there is an east west tail of downpours that extends across Central New Jersey north of Route 195 and south of Route 78. After these showers exit there will be a lot of clouds around along with muggy conditions. However the sun might cut through some of the cloud cover later this morning into this afternoon which in turn could set off another round of downpours or thunderstorms.

The Storm Prediction Center has much of our area in a marginal risk for severe weather today. Often times when warm fronts go by like this one they tend to “use up” all the available energy in the atmosphere leaving less for any mechanism to produce more storms later in the day. However the atmosphere is unstable enough where the risk continues into this evening. If the sun breaks through and takes temperatures in the 80s, the odds of some strong afternoon and evening thunderstorms increases.

HEATWAVE BEGINS FRIDAY..TEMPERATURES NEAR 100 SUNDAY?

Somebody in Northern New Jersey is going to see temperatures close to 100 degrees on Sunday. The well advertised heatwave gets underway Friday for most areas except perhaps for coastal areas like Central and Eastern Long Island which by the way could have a hard time putting together more than 1 or 2 days above 90 degrees. However certainly for all of New Jersey, Hudson Valley, NYC, Connecticut, and Western Long Island away from the ocean there will be multiple consecutive days of 90 degrees plus.

Severe Weather Risk Today Heatwave Begins Friday 100 Sunday?

Sunday looks to be the hottest day of the stretch that could last into at least the 4th of July and possibly a bit beyond that for some places. We may have to wait for a cold front to get here late next week or next weekend to break the spell of hot humid weather.

Last night we had a very good version (well they are all very good!) of the Joe & Joe Weather Show as we were joined by special guest Bill Goodman, meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Upton NY which covers the forecast area surrounding New York City from Northern New Jersey to Southern Connecticut, the Lower Hudson Valley & Long Island. He had some interesting insights into the upcoming heatwave as well as the long range and his opinion on the tropics and the colder than average Atlantic Ocean.
