Severe Weather Risk Thunderstorms Late Today & Tonight

More Autumn Weather Begins Sunday

We have severe weather risk on the table today across Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England. The Storm Prediction Center is indicating a slight risk from Southeastern Pennsylvania and Northern Delaware northeastward to Northern New Jersey and extreme Northeast Pennsylvania, the Hudson Valley and the Catskills to New York City and much of Western New England. This risk area has been increased from the marginal risk that was forecast yesterday from the Storm Prediction Center.

A cold front is heading eastward and we are seeing rain being generated on the northwest side of the front. Soon we will see showers and thunderstorms developing on the east side of the front and those will start to head east. Look for increasing chances for showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and on and off tonight into early Sunday morning as the front is going to be slow moving and we have to wait for a wave to develop on it and move northeast to swing the front to the east. That won’t happen until Sunday morning.

In the meantime until clouds and rain totally take over, temperatures will rise into the 80s. Dew points are also climbing through the 60s so the ingredients are there for stronger thunderstorms to develop and there is the chance we could see an isolated tornado or two spin up during the afternoon and evening. SPC has a 2 percent chance. I would say the highest risk time for strong storms will be late today into tonight. We will likely see on and off showers and thunderstorms into Sunday morning. It may take until midday for the last of the showers to move out to the east but once that happens, Sunday afternoon should see improvement from west to east with leftover clouds giving way to some developing sunshine. Temperatures will be some 15 degrees cooler with highs just in the low 70s on average.

By Monday morning lows will be in the 50s and some inland lows will be in the 40s. The week ahead promises to be dry through Thursday along with below average temperatures and low dew points. Monday and Tuesday will be no worse than partly sunny and highs both days will be just in the lower 70s. Nights will be quite cool with 50s in urban and coastal areas and many inland areas will be in the 40s. No rain is forecast through at least Thursday and the next cold front will arrive Friday.
