Severe Weather Risk Later Today Heat Humidity Thunderstorms
Say good by to comfortable humidity and say hello to a steamy day of dew points approaching 70 and an air mass that will be juicy and unstable.. We do have a cold front approaching us for later this afternoon and tonight and that opens the door to thunderstorms and severe weather risk. The Storm Prediction Center has a zone of slight risk from Northern Virginina northeastward all the way to Northern New England. Marginal risk runs along the coast from the eastern half of Delaware and New Jersey to Southeast New England except for areas around Cape Cod and Eastern Long Island.
SATELLITE
WEATHER RADAR
We could see some renegade downpours develop in the early afternoon that will be scattered around. Daytime heating here will be key to how strong the thunderstorms are and how widespread they might be. Highs will reach the upper 80s to lower 90s in most places.
The best approach regarding severe weather is to know that the risk is there and that this is not going to be a widespread event. In fact there will be some areas that will be in between line segments. Each model has a different way of viewing the situation. I tend to think that areas to the north of NYC in New England probably stand a better chance than areas to the south into Virginia but it all boils down to what the radar shows later today.
Once storms are done, skies should partially clear out with lows in the 60s to lower 70s. Wednesday looks to be a hot day with sunshine. Dew points are going to come down somewhat but will still be a bit on the sticky side. Highs Wednesday afternoon will be in the upper 80s to around 90 degrees.
The upper trough that is driving the flow from Canada is going to split in 2 and the second part of this trough will move through Thursday. This will produce a mix of sun and clouds and the risk for a shower or thunderstorm. Highs will be in the mid to upper 80s.
Slightly drier air will be here for Friday and Saturday and we should have some sunshine both days with reasonable humidity. Highs both days will be in the middle 80s. Then we make the transition to higher humidity and the risk for thunderstorms Saturday night into early Sunday and then again late Sunday into Sunday night. Some sun will occur in between with humid highs in the mid 80s to near 90 in some places.
