Severe Weather Exits Freeze Warning Wednesday Morning More Storm Systems Lie Ahead

This afternoon’s severe weather played according to plan and in many areas around NYC, it put on quite a show with a number of severe thunderstorm warnings, 1 tornado warning, and numerous reports of strong winds and hail. The cold front responsible has moved through and colder air will move in tonight on gusty northwest winds. A wind advisory is in effect from NYC east to Southeastern New England until 2am with gusty winds to 40 mph at times. Freeze warnings are also in effect for a large area from the Middle Atlantic states northeast to Southern Connecticut for Wednesday morning. Lows by morning will be in the upper 20s to lower 30s except for the warmer urban centers which should stay just above freezing.

My advice to everyone is to enjoy Wednesday which will be on the breezy side but we will at least see sunshine. Highs will be in the mid to upper 50s. However the full day of sunshine will be a rare day indeed with what lies ahead. Several storm systems will be moving east with the first one arriving later on Thursday.

This time of year (or for that matter anytime of year) that low pressure systems pass off the coast to the south of New England are troublesome. They create a raw onshore flow and of course rain. This low moves out of the Plains on Wednesday and tracks over the Ohio Valley and then off the New Jersey coast Friday morning. We will cloud up Wednesday night into Thursday with rain arriving from southwest to northeast Thursday afternoon and we will still see lingering clouds and rain into Friday. Then we get a short break Friday night into early Saturday but that is followed by another low that takes an almost identical track to the Thursday low. This brings rain in later Saturday and it will likely last on and off into Monday. While the flow is onshore (northeast) it will keep temperatures mostly in the 40s while it is raining later Thursday and for much of Friday. Some 50s are possible as you head further south into Southern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey but it will still have a raw feel to it.

Between the two systems rainfall of 2 to 3 inches seems likely over a large part of the Eastern US. Thunderstorms and severe weather will drive rainfall amounts across the south. This is certainly a wet period of weather we are in. We should get a break later Monday into Tuesday but another storm system with similar characteristics will bring more rain here late Tuesday night or Wednesday of next week.
