Scattered Thunderstorms Next Few Days

As Temperatures Increase Mid & Late Week

The torrential rains and flash flooding from yesterday are long gone as a frontal boundary has shifted to the east and to the south. We expect to see a low to near zero chance for downpours and thunderstorms today especially if you are northwest, north and northeast of New York City and Philadelphia. There may be a slightly higher chance for some scattered thunderstorms in Southern New Jersey and Southern Pennsylvania so we will leave in the chance for storms there. In between we will have some sunshine today and it will be on the warm and humid side with most highs in the mid to upper 80s.

Overnight lows will be in the upper 60s to middle 70s tonight with nothing more than some patchy low clouds overnight and perhaps a little bit of fog in some places. We are seeing a change in the wind direction which has been from the south southeast the last few days. it will become more south today and southwest Wednesday. This is going to allow temperatures to warm up some as we head into late week.

The risk for thunderstorms and torrential downpours however will increase again Wednesday as another upper trough moves through and works with all the tropical moisture that remains. The area of storms will shift from Virginia and Maryland today, northward to Pennsylvania and into New Jersey. The Weather Prediction Center is forecasting a 15 to 40 percent chance of localized flash flooding for Wednesday.

It will be another instance where we can forecast anywhere from a half inch to an inch of rain in general but if you get caught under a slow moving area of storms, rainfall amounts could easily 2, 3, or even 4 times that. The flash flooding from Monday July 14th storms leaves areas more vulnerable due to the ground being totally saturated so it would not take much rain before it runs off and floods.

As far as temperatures go, highs will be in the mid to upper 80s with some warm spots touching or even going above 90 degrees. Thursday leaves us with more of the same though winds will start to turn more southwest and that will take highs to the upper 80s and lower 90s. There is the risk for some afternoon and evening thunderstorms so the local flash flood risk continues.

Friday is going to be hot day with highs reaching the lower 90s in many areas and we do have a weather front that could bring a shower or thunderstorm or two when it goes by. However we may get a slight break over the weekend as we see little to no thunderstorm activity being forecast at this time. We will see temperatures a little lower as we top back into the 80s rather than 90s, and the humidity may actually go down somewhat though it will still be a bit elevated. It will at least feel better than the soupy conditions of the last 9 days.
