Saturday Spring Day Sunday Spring Showers

Let us proceed to Saturday because we are looking forward to the two faces of spring this weekend. Saturday will give us the nicer face with some sunshine and clouds and inland temperatures that will run into the 70s while Sunday will give us the showery face making Saturday the better of the two weekend days.

We continue to watch showers moving east on the regional and local radars this afternoon moving to the east. The bulk of the rain is across Eastern Pennsylvania north to the Hudson Valley and Connecticut. We will see this rain shower activity diminish as we head into the evening hours and the warm front producing these showers begins to move northward into Northern New York and Northern New England. This evening we should have some scattered showers left running around with no real consequence.

We are confident that Saturday we will see enough sunshine to boost temperatures up into the 70s across New Jersey & Eastern Pennsylvania. Coastal areas should reach the 60s except the immediate coast thanks to the south wind. This is about as good as it gets temperature wise on the last weekend of March.

Now on to Sunday where a cold front will put an end to all this with clouds and showers around. It appears that the showers will linger into the afternoon and then start ending from west to east as the afternoon wears on. Areas west of the coast could see some improvement while areas east of NYC will likely see showers linger until mid or late afternoon. Rainfall amounts however are going to be light and generally under a quarter of an inch.

Next week starts the new month of April and it will start off chilly with some sunshine both Monday and Tuesday with highs in the upper 40s and lower 50s as high pressure builds in and then moves offshore later Tuesday. We have been talking about the potential of a coastal low for Tuesday night and Wednesday and today’s models continue to move things around. We have been favoring the idea of the low getting ejected out to the east and having little impact here.

The northern jet today acts as a punter and kicks the southern stream system out to the east. This is how the vast majority of systems have behaved for the last few months and we continue to lean to this idea. If the northern stream is a little stronger and digs further south then we could see the low climb further north and skim the coastal areas with some rain and wind Tuesday night into Wednesday. If the out to sea solution becomes reality and the entire work week will be dry with a chilly start and a warmer finish. We probably will have to wait until Sunday to get definitive on the coastal system. In the meantime enjoy Saturday’s relative warmth.
