Rough Weather Ahead High Wind Watch Severe Weather Risk Christmas Eve Night

The watches have gone up for Christmas Eve for various weather issues we will be dealing with. We have a storm headed to the Great Lakes with a strong cold front headed for the coast. The primary issues will be winds ahead of the front Thursday night and heavy rain behind the front where we have deep snow cover so that combination could lead to flooding.
High Wind Watches are up for the coastal counties of New Jersey, Long Island and Connecticut. Winds will be gusting to over 50 mph from the south Thursday night especially after midnight. Flash Flood Watches are up for parts of North West New Jersey, the Hudson Valley north of Route 84, Northwest Connecticut and the Eastern Half of Pennsylvania. Here the problem will be especially acute with 2 to 3 inches of rain forecast on 20 or more inches of snow cover.
Ahead of all this we can at least say there are no issues here today. We should see plenty of sunshine today with temperatures topping out mostly in a range of about 40 to 45. There isn’t much cloud cover in the Northeast and Mid Atlantic on the satellite picture. The interactive ZOOM radar shows no radar echoes and your current temperatures

We will start to see some clouds come in tonight and with winds going to the south, temperatures overnight will likely hold in the upper 30s to middle 40s. Then it is on to Thursday with deteriorating weather conditions later in the day and the worst of this will be Thursday night.
Rain arrives in Eastern Pennsylvania by Thursday afternoon but it takes another 6 hours for the rain to shift eastward to the coast. To top it off with this cold front we have a severe weather risk which for now reaches up into Southern New Jersey and points southward. That risk area could push a little further north. The front is slowing down so look for rain to linger into Christmas morning before it ends from west to east. Winds will shift to the northwest and while diminishing they will will still be on the order of 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 40 mph. As far as temperatures go we will head to the 50s and 60s on Thursday and then fall sharply into the 30s on Friday. Some snow showers are possible Friday evening as the coldest of the cold arrives and the upper trough swings through. Saturday morning lows will be in the teens to lower 20s.
The weekend will be dry and cold with some sunshine both days. Highs Saturday will only be in the upper 20s and lower 30s. Highs Sunday will reach into the low to mid 30s. The next cold front arrives on Monday and we will address that issue and others in the long range later today.
