Rising Temperatures To Record Highs This Weekend

Rising Temperatures To Record Highs This Weekend

Today will be the coolest of the next 5 days and that isn’t saying much given the very warm weather pattern we are in. Rising temperatures will take us to record high possibilities or even probabilities this weekend. Here are the records for several locations beginning on Friday. For New York City the Friday record high is 64 set back in 1879 (pre climate change) followed by 68 in 1931 for Saturday (also pre climate change) and for Sunday its 64 in 1879. Friday we should fall short and Saturday we may get close but Sunday is definitely doable. For Newark Friday is 65 in 1971, Saturday is 68 in 1931 and for Sunday its 63 in 1946 (also pre climate change)

The satellite loop shows the system that moved off the Middle Atlantic Coast becoming quite the storm offshore with that signature satellite swirl very evident. To the west we have 2 weak systems and they should remain weak. The only issue will be Thursday night and Friday morning when there could be a spot shower in a few places as the very warm air begins to arrive.  Other than that Friday and the weekend look good with sunshine and some clouds all three days. Get ready for the records to fall.

As for today we will see clouds and some sunshine with highs in the upper 40s to lower 50s in most places. Tonight is a bit tricky because clouds will be around and they could hold temperatures up. I’m thinking 30s in the normal cold spots away from urban areas and low to mid 40s elsewhere. Thurday we should see highs from the mid 50s northern areas to the low 60s south. Up we go from there.

The rising temperatures are being caused by the strong southeast US ridge that has been unrelenting for weeks now. It was responsible for the record warm November. Take a look at these numbers for New York City through the first 7 days of the month. So far the month is averaging just under 6 degrees above normal. The next 5 days will all be much above normal and that will probably push that average up to about 7 or 8 degrees above normal by the time the weekend is done. The month currently is on a pace to make the 10 warmest list for sure unless the second half of the month slows the pace down.
