Rain Warm Air Ice Storm Likely Upstate, New England

Arctic air is gone for now and we are going above 32 degrees for the first time in 16 days for many areas. This has certainly been an amazing cold snap and it appears to have been the coldest period of weather on record for the Eastern US! Today not only do we go above freezing but we actually go a little bit above normal with sunshine and a few clouds. We should reach the low and middle 40s in most places. There are some clouds out to the west that will make there way through today but they should not be too problematic.

On the radar this morning we have a little bit of action with a band of lake effect snow in upstate NY which extends back east southeastward almost to Western Massachusetts along with some other snow showers across other parts of Northern New England but other than that things are very quiet today radar.

REGIONAL RADAR

A shot of slightly colder air comes in for tonight and Thursday. We should see partly to mostly clear skies tonight with lows mostly in the 20s. Wednesday we will squeeze out another decent day of sunshine with highs in the 30s.

RAIN WARM AIR ICE STORM INTERIOR NORTHEAST & OHIO VALLEY

Moving forward we have the next storm system that will bring rain and melting snow cover here as temperatures will rise ahead of it. Clouds will increase Thursday with highs in the 40s. Rain will be here for Friday with some highs reaching the 50s however there are two issues. The first is the snow pack which will hold temperatures down inland for sure. Second is the frontal boundary and where it sets up. Weather models show a cold Arctic high to the northwest which may cause cold air to bleed southward into the Northeast later Friday night into Saturday. Last night’s model runs would argue for a change to ice and snow before precipitation ends here during Saturday but places not too far north and west of the coast could be at risk for a significant icing event.

The GFS model above is for Saturday morning. The freezing line is not that far away from the coast at this point as the wave of low pressure is about to go by. Cold arctic air is to the northwest pressing south. Models continue to trend colder so we will watch today’s series and see where they take us. At the very least this storm will bring significant snow and ice from the Middle Mississippi Valley to the Northern Ohio Valley and the interior Northeast for sure.
