Rain Changing to Snow Inland Tuesday
Rain Changing to Snow Inland Tuesday
Round 1 of 3 rounds of precipitation is done as the first disturbance moves northeastward. Inland areas picked up a coating to an inch or so of snow as advertised with very little along the coast except at the start. We see weather conditions improving this afternoon with some breaks of sun possible through the clouds and temperatures in the 40s.
The improvement however will not last as radars to the south are already loading up with moisture. Low pressure is headed out of the Gulf States and into the Ohio Valley. At least we have some time in between with no precipitation forecast from now until Tuesday morning.
Tuesday’s forecast is very tricky. Low pressure will move to the lower Ohio Valley and weaken as a secondary develops along the Virginia/North Carolina Coast. That secondary will begin to drain cold air southward from New England and I suspect we will see rain changing to snow.

The best chances for this will be north of the coast but I would not rule it out for coastal areas because in situations like this, cold air often times drains further south than modeled. Certainly for inland areas there is the possibility from as little as a coating to possibily several inches of wet snow Tuesday evening and Tuesday night. The NAM model has been doing well of late and we continue to favor it until it stops working.
We will be updating the situation later today as the new model cycle begins. In the meantime it is leftover clouds today with temperatures in the 40s..Cold with clouds tonight and lows in the upper 30s and lower 40s. A cold rain developing Tuesday which changes to snow late in the day across northern areas away from the coast. Highs just into the 40s and then dropping into the 30s. There will be one more round Wednesday night and Thursday as cold air arrives and one last wave of low pressure moves through on the polar front.
