Rain Arrives Later Today From West To East Weather Improves Monday

After what was an utterly nasty miserable day complete with a textbook looking tornado/waterspout over Barnegat Bay near Toms River NJ yesterday afternoon, it is time to move along to the next weather system  We cleared out overnight night giving us a nice start to Mother’s Day but it won’t last as the satellite shows clouds already beginning to move in and they will only increase and thicken up as the day wears on.

Temperatures today should reach the 60s before clouds take over but where clouds are already moving in, temperatures will be in the cooler 50s which is why the forecast high temperature map looks the way it does with warmer temperatures to the east and northeast into New England (due to more sun) and cooler temps to the west and south due to clouds and eventually rain.

As far as what time rain arrives today I’m putting up two maps which shows where the leading edge of the rain is at 2pm and where it is at 8pm so between the two you can figure out the start times. Clearly if you are east of NYC rain probably won’t arrive until after 4 or 5pm but if you are west of NYC it arrives between 2pm and 5pm and west of Philadelphia and the New Jersey Pennsylvania state line, rain arrives before 2pm. Rainfall amounts are for the 6 hours prior to the map time.

Low pressure moves along and heads east with rain ending around or after midnight. Weather conditions should improve late tonight and Monday leaving us with a mix of sun and clouds, a northwest breeze and highs Monday into the 60s.

The week ahead is shaping up to be mostly dry and cool. Another cold front arrives on Tuesday thanks to the strong northwest flow into the Eastern US. The front won’t have much with it other than a wind shift and a few clouds so look for some sunshine Tuesday with highs in the 60s. Another weak front passes late Wednesday again from the northwest so look for sunshine again and not much if anything with the frontal passage. Highs will be in the 60s. The end of the week brings a weather system eastward but it appears weak as the strong northern jet suppresses everything south. If this verifies the end of the week will be dry and cool. Then next weekend we could start to warm things up a bit as a ridge builds into the Eastern US and that could bring a stretch of above average temperatures.
