Rain Likely Saturday

It is a quiet chilly evening across much of Eastern Pennsylvania and Southern New England. We had some sun through high clouds all day long which cut back on the daytime heating and kept highs in check mostly in the upper 30s and lower 40s. In full sun we might have gotten much warmer. Clouds are around tonight though there are thin spots and skies could always partially clear at times. Temperatures tonight won’t be as low as the last tow nights with most lows in the 20s while warmer urban areas will be in the low to mid 30s.

Nothing of consequence is on the radar as most of the rain at the moment is too far west to come into range of even the regional radar. Friday will be another day of clouds and some sun peering through. We should make it a bit higher with readings reaching the mid and upper 40s. Then it is on to Saturday with rain on the way.

Low pressure redeveloping over Chesapeake Bay and heading virtually over NYC makes this more like a glorified cold front more than anything else. Saturday should see rain during the day and some of the rain could be heavy. Temperatures will be in the 40s. Rainfall amounts will be on the order of an inch to 1.25 inches.

There could be a little freezing rain at the start in parts of Northwest NJ & Northeast Pennsylvania early Saturday morning but for anything frozen you have to go way north upstate or into Northern New England. Even elevated areas further south won’t see much. Weather conditions improve on Sunday.

When we talk about pattern changes snow lovers incorrectly assume that it is an either/or proposition. In reality there are for more “bad” patterns for snow than there are good ones. In this new pattern we have been in, the problem is the locked up cold air in the polar regions thanks to the position of the polar vortex around the North Pole. One sits over Alaska and the other Greenland. The map above is for next Sunday February 2. It is also slightly beyond the time frame where today’s earlier run of the GFS went a bit insane with a low moving up the East Coast next weekend. I did that deliberately since I’ve grown weary of snow weenies storm grasping at any opportunity. There is a window for something to come out of the Gulf States later next week but that is about as far as I want to go with it for now. In the meantime it doesn’t look like much is happening next week with high pressure covering us pretty much all week long with temperatures near or a little above average.
