We had a solid dousing of rain overnight and some places along the coast picked up well over an inch. Now we watch low pressure heading northeastward which is sitting pretty much right on top of us this morning and will be heading into New England this afternoon. The satellite signature this morning shows the heaviest rain has moved into New England and now it is a matter of getting through the back edge stuff before weather conditions genuinely improve later today or tonight.

Regional and local radars are still on the busy side this morning as the precipitation shifts into Central and Northern New England later today and there it will be in the form of mostly snow. To the southwest of NYC is the precipitation associated with the upper trough and it is actually producing some snow in parts of South Central and Southwest Pennsylvania. It is just a cheap thrill and nothing to write home about. All of this is moving to the northeast into New England while the backside stuff in Pennsylanai is moving mostly to the east or even southeast.

As the day wears on and we see the last of any rain ending for northern areas we will just deal with lots of leftover clouds with temperatures in the 40s. The day will have that raw feel to it for shore. Skies will clear out tonight though with overnight lows mostly in the 30s. There isn’t much in the way of cold air behind this low.

Monday and Tuesday will be two nice days with sunshine for both and high temperatures that will actually be rather nice for this time of year and definitely above what we have seen for much of the month. Temperatures will average near or a little above normal into Wednesday which is when the enxt cold front arrives. Highs Monday will reach into the 50s and highs Tuesday will be in the mid to upper 50s.

Wednesday of course is the big travel day with folks coming and going from all over the US and there will be weather issues this Wednesday especially later in the day and in the evening in the Northeast & Middle Atlantic States as winds will be picking up. There will also be delays if you are flying to the West or Southwestern US (or flying from) as storminess moves into this region with rain and snow likely.

Wednesday will be a warm day with clouds and the chance for a couple of passing showers with highs reaching the upper 50s and lower 60s, Then low pressure heads into Northeastern New England toward Nova Scotia and strengthens into a major storm. The pressure gradient tightens and the winds will howl at 20 to 30 mph with gusts to 40 mph at times Wednesday night into Thanksgiving Day. Skies do clear out though and it will also turn colder for Thursday with highs just in the 40s.

Thursday Thanksgiving Forecast High Temperatures

Beginning on Friday and lasting into the first week of December the weather will be all about the developing blocking pattern as low pressure stalls near Newfoundland for a few days beginning Friday and creates a log jam of systems to the west with the jet stream displaced well to the south of normal.

This blocking pattern could impact our weather here in the east in a number of ways. The first is keeping things dry and quiet although on the cold side of normal for Friday and next weekend as it log jams weather systems to the west trying to move east. This is also going to create rather unstable model runs going forward as the atmosphere is going to be setting up in ways you don’t see too often. This opens the door to a rather stormy pattern developing as we head into December and it also will open up cold air from Canada and bringing it into the US. We will be discussing long range implications of this on our subscription weather platform on Patreon which is where most of our winter weather and long range analysis will be this winter season.
