Onshore Flow Columbus Day Weekend Chance For Showers Sunday

We are seeing a nice finish to the week as the morning low clouds have mostly burned off and skies are generally partly sunny across the area from Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England. We should see highs in the 70s everywhere this afternoon except near the coast where it will be in the upper 60s to near 70. We are heading into the Columbus Day holiday weekend and unfortunately it won’t be picture perfect. Sunday appears to be the day where we have some shower risk. For now the radars are nice and quiet.

The onshore flow continues this weekend and actually gets a little stronger as high pressure moves to New Brunswick in Canada and eventually heads to the east. To the south along the North Carolina coast we have a developing low. The flow across the area becomes more east and southeast which is a moist flow.

This certainly will create cloud issues for Saturday and especially Sunday as the southeast to east flow will probably keep the low clouds from burning off. There could be a few very light showers or a sprinkle or two on Saturday and perhaps a slightly higher chance for showers on Sunday. Rainfall amounts will be light except along the immediate coast where a quarter of an inch or so is possible. Highs will be in the 60s to around 70 both days.

Things do start to change on Monday as the onshore flow starts to relax and the offshore high pulls away to the East. The low to the south weakens. We still will have lingering cloud issues on Monday but I think there won’t be any showers to worry about. Monday highs will be back into the 70s especially if we get a little luck and the sun breaks out in the afternoon.

Next week all of the action will be in the western US as a lead low comes out of the Southern Plains Sunday and heads to the Great Lakes. The upper ridge in the East continues to hold so that front simply falls apart before it gets here. The onshore flow is gone and this leaves us with some sunshine on Tuesday. Highs will be in the mid to upper 70s. Wednesday and Thursday of next week will be nice and warm with sunshine taking highs to the mid 70s to around 80 degrees. Thursday we could see highs in the upper 70s and lower 80s in many places. Finally a second storm in the Northern Plains will set the ball rolling for the ridge in the East to break down late next week and we could finally see a cold front pass here late next Friday or Saturday with cooler weather to follow.
