NYC Weather: Dense Fog This Morning

How quick we went from blue cloudless skies to a pea soup condition but here it is with fog all over the place this morning and visibility down to near zero in many locations. The fog developed very quickly last night at around 9pm along coastal communities in New Jersey and Long Island and then rapidly spread inland north and north west.

Above the low clouds we do have some returning moisture that will be we will not see another picture perfect day with lots of clouds and the chance for some light rain or drizzle at some point. Temperatures today will be in the 60s to near 70. The moisture field as shown on the satellite is not impressive so some breaks of sunshine can’t be ruled out.

Friday our winds turn to the southwest ahead of the next cold front and that means a very warm day with clouds and some sunshine. Some record highs are possisble with high temperatures reaching the low or even middle 70s in some places. An approaching cold front will perhaps trigger off a late afternoon or evening shower but nothing more.

Colder air follows for the weekend and into early next week Lower 60s will be the highs on Saturday so you are looking at temperatures 15 degrees cooler but still above normal. Sunday through Tuesday will be cooler still with most highs not out of the low and middle 50s and nights will be in the 30s and 20s again especially if we have clear skies and light winds (which should be the case).

Long range there are question marks for Tuesday and Wednesday with an onshore flow developing and low pressure offshore. This could mean the return of some clouds although the threat for rain is another question as most of that moisture is forecast to be offshore for the time being.
