We continue to see the vast extent of warnings across the entire area as this noreaster gets undeway. From the standpoint of noreasters I’ve been saying this is going to be a moderately strong one when you weigh in all the factors. Wind appears to be the biggest issue along the coast. Winds will be every bit of 30-50 mph with gusts to 70 mph. Rainfall will be on the order of a couple of inches which the drought plagued ground and waterways should be able to absorb readily. Coastal flooding from high tide should be moderate to a few areas experiencing major flooding with tides generally 2 to 4 feet above normal. Snow and sleet in elevated areas north and northwest of the coast should see as little as a coating to perhaps several inches in some places. This is the part of the forecast that I have the least confidence in.

NOREASTER SNOW FORECAST

I’m leaving my snow forecast map essentially as is and just point out that the latitude here is wide for something unexpected to happen. Everything I see says this should not be a big deal on the snow end of the equation though some models continue to say otherwise. Just be advised that the situation is fluid and that we will have to wait for the radar and observations tonight to tell us.

Radars this morning show the rain to the south and you can see the rotation of the storm as the rain begins to swing northward. Look for rain to overspread New Jersey from south to north this afternoon and be overhead tonight into Tuesday morning. The strongest winds will be during this afternoon and tonight and the high tide tonight should have the biggest flooding issue from the standpoint of coastal flooding.
