Nice Wednesday Severe Weather Risk Friday Memorial Day Weekend Outlook

Calm seasonal weather is on the table for today. Not much is showing up on the satellite views and the radars are nice and quiet. Dry air from high pressure stretching from New England to Nova Scotia is procuing a light onshore flow from the east and southeast keeping temperatures in check today. Highs this afternoon will be in the 60s along the immediate coast and upper 60s to some middle 70s as you work your way inland. We have no issues for tonight other than clouds that will be developing. The southeast wind brings in moisture and that changes the situation ahead for Thursday.

Thursday will be a day where we will have clouds around though inland it may be more of changeable sky conditions that will dominate. Temperatures are going to be a little lower due to the cloud cover with highs in the 60s along the coast and upper 60s to lower 70s inland. Some breaks of sun are possible but the flow of moisture is priming up the air for Friday as the next cold front approaches.

Low pressure over the Middle Mississippi Valley is producing lots of rain and thunderstorms there southward to the Gulf States. That low moves east on Friday. Most of the energy with this will go by to our north but there will a trailing cold front that will bring showers and thunderstorms probably in the late afternoon and into Friday night. This opens the door to severe weather risk and the Storm Prediction Center in its initial outlook has much of our area in a slight risk zone. The risk area this time around may be more south rather than north.

The cold front will pass east Friday night and normally that would bring improvement everywhere. There is a minor glitch with this for Saturday. Most of the upper air energy with this passes Friday night. However there is an upper trough that is lagging behind and will pass through on Saturday. Most of the moisture will be taken away from the cold front but the remaining atmosphere Saturday will be a little unstable.

Of the 3 holidays from late May to September, Memorial Day weekend is usually the one that has the most issues given the time of year. Last year was a complete washout for the most part. This time around the one day that has the risk for scattered showers or a thunderstorm would be Saturday but this is not going to a widespread rain issue. Instead let’s call it cloudy to partly sunny for sky conditions. Saturday highs will be in the 70s to around 80 degrees.

Sunday and Monday look good for dry weather and sunshine. It will also warm up a bit though temperatures will not get out of hand. High pressure will settle in as long as the Saturday lingering trough moves along as the European shows. Sunday and Monday highs will reach the upper 70s to lower 80s both days with temperatures cooler at the shore in case you have beach plans.

Much of next week looks to be dry and warm. We may start to see some 90 degree highs around the middle of next week. Longer range however we are seeing signs that a blocking pattern could be setting up which means cooler than average temperatures and sometimes it comes with other complications but that is a long way from where we are right now.
