Much Colder Into the Weekend, Cold Front Saturday,

Coastal Low Close But Offshore Sunday

A cold front is passing offshore this morning and precipitation is moving east and offshore. Colder air will be moving in as the day wears on and we have already reached the highs for the day as they were left over from overnight. Temperatures will settle into the 30s today and will probably fall off later this afternoon into the upper 20s and lower 30s by sunset. Look for some breaks of sunshine to develop and northwest winds will pick up to 20 to 30 mph in gusts making it feel even colder.

Tonight we will see skies clear with gusty winds and Friday morning lows will be in the teens to around 20 degrees. Gusty winds will continue Friday. Look for sunshine for much of the day. High temperatures Friday afternoon will generally be in the low to mid 30s. Winds should ease somewhat later in the day.

The next round of weather changes gets underway Friday night into Saturday. Low pressure moves from the Great Lakes to Eastern Canada. A warm front will approach late Friday night and Saturday morning and there could be a brief period of snow with this feature as the warm front goes by. It might be enough to coat the ground or perhaps leave a bit more in colder areas, mainly from New York City and the Hudson Valley north & east. Temperatures Saturday morning will be in the upper 20s and lower 30s and by days end we will be in the upper 30s and lower 40s. A cold front will pass with little fanfare in the afternoon.

Colder air comes in behind the cold front Saturday night and Sunday. The front is forecast to slow down and stall just offshore. A wave is forecast to develop on the front off the Southeast US Coast and move northeastward up the coast. Most of the model runs overnight suggest a close call for coastal areas of New Jersey, Long Island and Southern New England depending on where the front stalls and how close to the coast this system winds up.

We also have another low moving into the Great Lakes with an arctic boundary pushing eastward at the same time and this may act as a kicker and push the low further offshore. Most of the ensemble models suggest this outcome is the most likely. AI models of the European and GFS however suggest more room between the two systems and a westward shift. The way the weather patterns have worked this morning would have us lean in the direction of a system further offshore and having little to no impact. Either way very cold air is on the way for next week.
