Mostly Dry Weekend But Showers & Thundertorms Possible

Saturday Night & Memorial Day

Never the best of the holiday weekends but you make it work for you as best you can. This Memorial Day holiday weekend will be OK for the most part but there will be some exceptions. Today starts of dry but we have a  weak weather system that is going to approach and move through overnight into Sunday morning. The dayside will feature sunshine giving way to increasing clouds. Temperatures will be in the cooler upper 60s and lower 70s along the immediate coast while most highs inland will reach into the 80s. Any rain should hold off to overnight in the form of scattered showers and thunderstorms. The chances are not all that high and some people will miss out all together. Temperatures overnight will be in the mid 50s to lower 60s.

Sunday remains the best weekend day as the system overnight moves along and we have some time before the next weather system comes in from the west. This leaves us with a nice day overall for Sunday with sunshine and no rain during the dayside at least. Temperatures Sunday will be in the 60s to near 70 at the coast and inland highs should reach into the 80s.

Low pressure in the Southern Plains is going to be heading northeastward over the weekend and this brings widespread severe weather today to the Great Plains with elevated tornado risk. Sunday the severe weather are shifts to a large portion of the Ohio and Tennessee Valley. The low pressure center strengthens to a rather strong storm system for this time of year and the cold front from this system approaches the East Coast Monday.

We will likely see showers and thunderstorms scattered around Sunday night but they will become more numerous during the day Monday. It is especially tricky to figure out how the severe weather risk sets up for Monday as that depends on a warm front and where exactly the warm sector sets up.

Right now it seems that the greatest risk for severe weather will be from Southern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey southward into Maryland, Delaware & Virginia with marginal to general thunderstorm risk elsewhere. This could change some as we get closer to Monday. In the meantime temperatures Monday will be lower due to clouds, showers and an ocean wind but most highs will be in the 70s. Areas to the south in the slight risk zone could see highs in the upper 70s and lower 80s.

Showers and thunderstorms will end from west to east sometime Monday night and we will see improving weather conditions Tuesday. Much of next week we will see near or even slightly below average temperatuers as the trough returns to the Eastern US setting up a cooler pattern overall with not much in the way of rain.
