Moderating Temps But Arctic Air Arrives Saturday Snow Risks Rise For Sunday

The moderating trend begins today as the core of the most recent arctic air mass exits to the east and we await the arrival of the next arctic front that will arrive during Friday. That arctic air mass will be a player for the weekend storm system that will bring snow to Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England. A warm front will be going by to our north today with some snow for parts of Upstate New York and New England. We will see clouds and sunshine today. Temperatures will reach the low and middle 30s this afternoon.

Temperatures tonight won’t be going anywhere as that milder air on southwest winds takes hold. Most lows across Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England will be in the mid 20s to lower 30s. Thursday we will see some sunshine. A weak front will pass through without much fanfare. Highs Thursday will reach the middle to upper 40s which will feel great coming off the recent cold shot.

A second front comes Friday and this is the arctic boundary that will be moving through. Arctic air will begin spreading in on gusty northwest winds. We will see some sunshine but temperatures will hover in the upper 20s and lower 30s for much of the day and then head to the single digits and low teens by Saturday morning. Saturday will be a dry but very cold day with most highs just in the low to mid teens. We will have sunshine giving way to arriving clouds.

A stalled arctic boundary across the Gulf States is a recipe for a winter storm of significance for the Deep South and the Lower Ohio Valley and that gets underway Saturday. Low pressure develops on the front and moves northeast, attempts to redevelop off the North Carolina coast. All this Gulf moisture will surge up the coast and the risks of a sizeable snowfall across Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England are rising.

The Weather Prediction Center is indicating a 50 to 70 percent chance for at least 3 inches of snow/sleet across all of Eastern Pennsylvania to Southern New England and a 70 to 90 percent chance for New Jersey to Delaware and Maryland. Given the set up we are seeing, these numbers seem realistic. We will likely start to throw some accumulation numbers around as I give my early call Thursday afternoon and evening. Snow will develop during the early morning hours Sunday and likely last into Sunday evening. Areas at the coast could see some mixing coming into play. However even with that happening, a significant snow accumulation is growing more likely.
