Miserable Weather Rest of the Week

Small Window Opens For Snow Saturday Night Into Sunday

Miserable is about the only way to describe the weather over the next week or so. Perhaps later Friday or Saturday will be the only time where weather conditions will be dry. The rest of the time we will be wet. Inland areas north and west of the coast might have to deal with some light icing issues Wednesday night into Thursday morning.

Icing issues are for Wednesday night into Thursday morning and we are talking about a tenth of an inch or less of ice accretion from NW New Jersey, the Hudson Valley and Connecticut as well as Pennsylvania with the exception of Southeast Pa. In the meantime we have some showers to work through today as payback for the nice warm day we had yesterday.

Radars show bands of showers moving eastward. Nothing here is especially heavy. We expect these shower bands to weaken somewhat as the day wears on. Highs today will be mostly in the 50s but lower than what we saw yesterday.

We might engineer a short break in the action later today but then some more showers fire up tonight as a cold front passes early Wednesday morning. After that it remains cloudy and it turns colder as temperatures ease, eventually dropping into the 30s. This sets up for some sleet or freezing rain for inland areas Wednesday night into Thursday morning. In New Jersey we are talking north of Route 78 and mainly west of 287. In the Hudson Valley it would be north of 287 and in Connecticut mostly north of Route 15 though some minor icing could stretch down to I-95. In Pennsylvania some light icing is possible everywhere except the southeast part of the state. Then it is rain afterwards. We are setting up for heavy rains and possibly even a few thunderstorms in the mix Thursday night into Friday morning as low pressure moves up the East Coast.

Rainfall amounts from this are likely to be substantial in some places especially where a thunderstorm or two gets involved. 1 to 2 inches of rain seems likely and some places could go higher.

Once this system plays through and moves out on Friday we will see some improvement into Saturday. We have mentioned that this winter, the way things have gone, snow will only come inside small windows of opportunity. We mentioned yesterday that one such window appears for Saturday night and Sunday and that still remains the case today.

It would have to be perfect in terms of timing track and dealing with a minimal amount of cold air but an accumulating snow is possible Saturday night into Sunday. It is still a long shot but it has become a bit more of a possibility. There is also plenty of time for all of this to time out differently or just fall apart. For snow lovers this could be the only chance they will see over the next 10 days or so.
