There is a MARGINAL risk of severe weather today and tonight from Northern New Jersey and the Hudson Valley southward including Eastern Pennseylvania including the northeast and south central parts southward into the middle Atlantic states. The main threat time will be this afternoon into tonight. A strong upper trough is swinging eastward and that will trigger downpours and some heavy thunderstorms this afternoon and tonight. The upper trough will be slow moving and that could produce some heavy rains and possible localized flooding in some areas especially after the rains for 2 days ago. It is hard to believe considering how dry it has been that we are having back to back rain events but even in dry patterns you get the occasional flip for a few days.
On Sunday the trough will cause a wave to develop and that could bring another round of rain during Sunday especially in the afternoon and evening. The greatest threat from this will probably be for coastal areas and points northeast with lesser amounts back through Western New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania though even here some downpours cannot be ruled out. Rainfall forecast amounts from the National Weather Service have been updated and are generally in the 1 to 2 inch range though it is entirely possible that some amounts could be locally higher depending on where the heaviest downpours set up.
This will be the last threat for rain that we see as this coming week we will be reverting back to the pattern we had for much of last week. A big ridge in the east will rebuild again though it may not be quite as strong as the prior one. This means a return to above normal and then much above normal temperatures for the middle and latter part of this coming work week with sunshine by day and warm increasingly humid nights with minimal to no chance of any downpours. The next weather front is not due to arrive until sometime next weekend.
