Major Storm Coastal Flood Warning Flood Watch Wind Advisory
Coastal Flood Warning for Long Island South Shore and Northeast Suffolk County North Shore is now up into Friday morning. Coastal Flood Warning is also in effect for the counties surrounding NY Harbor and for Monmouth County in New Jersey. Minor to moderate coastal flooding is forecast with the next 2 high tide cycles. All of this is being driven by a major storm that is developing in the Southern Appalachians. That storm will move northward so get set for heavy rains of up to 3 inches. Flood Watch is posted for much of the Middle Atlantic & Northeast US. Along the coast we will have wind issues and Wind Advisories posted for gusts to 50 mph along the coast of Long Island and New Jersey.
Clouds have been rapidly thickening up and we are seeing rain breaking out on local radars below. The regional radar is loaded with rain from Virginia southward into Georgia and that rain will be moving in this evening and it will be with us overnight into Friday morning.
LOCAL RADAR NEW YORK CITY
After the main area of rain plays through some thunderstorms are likely to develop later Friday morning but if everything moves along, they should be moving out of New Jersey between 1pm & 4 pm and out of Long Island and Southern New England between 4pm and 7pm on Friday. Winds Friday morning will be gusting to 40 to 50 mph from the south or south southeast. Temperatures will be rising overnight and we will be in the 60s in many areas on Friday.
Winds will drop off as the day wears on but then pick up again Friday night as they shift to the southwest and then west. We should begin to see some improvement in weather conditions overnight into Saturday. Winds Saturday will still be rather gusty with some sunshine. Temperatures will be easing on Saturday from the 50s to the low to mid 40s on Sunday. Sunday we will see sunshine and some clouds. An upper air disturbance will bring clouds and a few showers or snow showers Sunday night. Then it is dry and seasonal for Monday Christmas Eve & Tuesday Christmas Day with sunshine both days. Highs will be in the low 40s and nighttime temperatures will be in the 20s to lower 30s. No White Christmas this year for our area.
