Major Ocean Storm Will Keep Us Unsettled Into Friday

One of the things that happens when you have a spring blocking pattern in place is that you tend to get major ocean storms that develop offshore. These storms tend to get very intense and are often large in terms of the impact. The good news is that 9 times out of 10 these storms are far enough offshore that other than kicking up the surf they aren’t a problem. Sometimes however they tend to move offshore and meander a bit and this creates opportunities for some moisture to back westward or even southwestward from New England. This seems to be the issue going forward tonight and lasting into Friday.

REGIONAL RADAR

Right now the low that will become this major ocean storm is moving through the Southeast US and you can see rain on the regional radar as far north as Virginia but I don’t expect this rain to get any further north than say southern Maryland this evening. Low pressure will slide off the Carolinas and intensify. Meanwhile as the satellite picture shows we are sitting in clouds as we have pretty much all day with just some breaks of sunshine and here and there. Temperatures struggled all day just to get into the 50s. Overnight clouds will hold temperatures up as we bottom in the mid 30s to around 40 Wednesday morning.

Wednesday we will see lots of clouds around especially along coastal areas but there might be less cloud cover well inland to allow for partly sunny skies to try to develop there. (Western NJ west into Pennsylvania). The storm is far enough offshore that we don’t see any rain issues for Wednesday. Highs will be just in the low to mid 50s.

The blocking pattern forces the storm to slow down to a crawl offshore and it actually begins a counterclockwise loop Wednesday night into Thursday night. Backing southwestward from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia are clouds and showers and we could see some of those showers make to Southern New England and possibly as far south as coast New Jersey and Delaware later Thursday or Thursday night. If this happens the rain should not amount to much. Otherwise we will sit in clouds much of Thursday and possibly into at least early Friday. Highs both days will be in the low to mid 50s.

The storm system moves away for the weekend and I am going to be cautiously optimistic for both Saturday and Sunday even though we do have a weak system moving eastward across the Great Lakes and into the Northeast Saturday and Sunday. It should weaken and fall apart before it gets here so for now we will call for a mix of sun and clouds for both days. Highs will be in the upper 50s and lower 60s.
