Overnight we have seen two developments that leave cause for concern. The first is that Hurricane Lane has strengthened. The pressure has fallen some 15 millibars in 10 hour per the last Air Force investigation of the storm. The second is that weather models continue to shift to the right and this includes a big shift in the European model which has been the one hold out among the global models still showing an offshore track and staying south of the Hawaiian Islands. There are still a number of hurricane tracking models that keep Hurricane Lane offshore but they all are close enough where a hurricane watch is now warranted and the Central Pacific Hurricane Center has acted accordingly.
WIDE ATLANTIC TROPICAL SATELLITE
The satellite presentation this morning is excellent. There is well defined circular eye and the hurricane has the symmetric look of a well developed category 4 tropical cyclone. The forecast weakening has not materialized yet. There is strong wind shear to the west of the hurricane but there is a question now regarding whether that shear will relax somewhat over the next several days. The hurricane should weaken from its major status we are seeing now as it nears a Hawaii but the impressive nature we see know leaves room for doubt and perhaps the weakening will occur at a much slower rate then modeled at the moment.
For more on Hurricane Lane you can read all the advisories and discussions at the Central Pacific Hurricane Center’s website.
