Long Island Spring Heat 90 Degree Highs Severe Weather Risk Late Today

Our Sunday of heat is underway and we can see on the satellite picture that we have sunny skies. There is a cold front lying across Upstate NY that will be moving southward. This is creating a west to northwest surface wind and with sunshine, temperatures heat up and the sea breeze is minimized to the beaches themselves and even there it will be a bit of a struggle.

The heat comes to an end today when the cold front passes this evening. While we are aren’t exactly deep into a tropical air mass, dew points are edging up into the lower 60s. Add to this the front and some lifting ahead of it and we we could see isolated severe thunderstorms late this afternoon and evening.

No sea breeze means no marine influence. This is usually the way thunderstorms get ripped apart when they cross Long Island. However this would be an east west line of cells moving north to south rather than west to east so assuming some develop, they should hold together as the cross Long Island Sound from Connecticut and the Hudson Valley.

Once these storms play through weather improves tonight with lows in the mid to upper 50s. Monday will be a much cooler day as a high to the north settles over head. We will start with some sunshine but look for some clouds develop with highs just into the 70s.

This is going to be a week of fast changes as Monday’s cool shot quickly moves out offshore and winds turn west and a warm front goes by on Tuesday. We are not expecting any rain from all this but just clouds and sun for Tuesday with highs in the mid to upper 70s.

Wednesday will be a hot day and could very well be even hotter than what we are seeing today. A west wind and a gusty one at that plus sunshine will take temperatures into the low and possibly middle 90s for highs. This will be another day where there won’t be much of a sea breeze. Dew points will rise into the lower 60s and that will mean some humidity discomfort but not oppressive. Finally there will be the chance for late day thunderstorms as another front passes from the north.  This could prove to be the hottest day of the spring given the west wind set up.

LONG RANGE OUTLOOK

While Thursday will be dry and still a bit on the warm side, gradually cooler air coming down from Canada will wedge into the Northeast and Northern Mid Atlantic states at the end of the week. Low pressure coming across the Ohio Valley threatens to bring much needed rain for the end of the week and for getaway day for the Memorial Day weekend. The issue for the weekend is whether we see this low getting suppressed far enough south to take us out of the rain. There still may be clouds and rain issues for part of the Memorial Day weekend. This is always the summer holiday weekend which has a risk for one or two days to be less than stellar. More on the holiday weekend will be on my subscription platform on Patreon later today.
