Long Island Memorial Day Weekend Outlook Not A Good One

When you think about it, we haven’t had many “gloom and doom” type days where it is cloudy for several days in a row, low clouds produce on and off rain, and a raw northeast wind keeps temperatures in the 50s. Well that pretty much sums up the Saturday and Sunday part of this holiday weekend for Long Island. Heading into it though, we did have a beautiful warm dry day today and we should be mostly clear tonight with most lows in the low to mid 50s.

Friday should start with a bit of sun but clouds will be on the increase. Low pressure developing in the Upper Midwest will be moving southeastward into the Ohio Valley and then the low center heads for Chesapeake Bay by Saturday morning. High pressure will be enveloped around it over New England. The result will be a steady rain developing late Friday afternoon and evening and lasting into Saturday morning. Temperatures Friday will be in the 60s and then head into the 50s once the rain starts. A raw northeast wind will commence Friday night and continue on Saturday. It could get a little gusty along the coast.

Were it only one wave of low pressure we would be one and one and weather conditions would improve for Sunday. However the upper feature gets hung up in the Appalachians and a second wave develops on the frontal boundary for Sunday.

Some models are flatter than others meaning that the low is further east and therefore there would be much less rain.  Even if that is the case for Long Island it would seem that we will see at least some rain out of this on Sunday especially early in the day. It will also be a gloom and doom type day with temperatures in the 50s to perhaps near 60. Monday hinges on that wave you see above being the last one in the series. Also we need this wave to move along or at least get far enough east to allow dry air to come Monday. For now we will be cautiously optimistic and go for clouds giving way to some sunshine by afternoon. Monday’s highs will be in the upper 60s to perhaps near 70.
