Long Island Hottest Day Of The Week Chance For Thunderstorms Overnight

July is drawing to a close with just an handful of days left and it is interesting to note that for Long Island this has NOT been a particularly hot month. In fact, Islip has only gone to 90 degrees once back on July 7th and through yesterday the month has been exactly average! Today is the last chance for a 90 degree high this month so it will depend on the sea breeze. Inland highs should make the upper 80s to near 90 with temperatures a little cooler at the shore. Look for sunshine most of the day and I don’t expect any thunderstorms during the daytime hours.

Radars are quiet for now but they should start to pick up on thunderstorms later this evening. The timing of this approaching cold front brings the chance for thunderstorms after 8pm

Long Island lies south of the severe weather risk zone set up by the Storm Prediction Center which is focusing its risk from Southern New England northward. The line is likely to be stronger in New England than over us. The NAM model and others shows a narrow line of storms moving through tonight.

Wednesday we will be back to sunshine or certainly no worse than partly sunny skies. Highs will be in the low to mid 80s with humidity levels on the moderate side and we are leaving any chance for a shower or thunderstorm out of the forecast. Thursday brings a stronger cold front and the likelihood that we will see thunderstorms Thursday afternoon and evening. The activity will be more widespread and it will come in earlier in the day so temperatures will probably reach into the 80s before coming to a halt. Behind the front we look ahead to a second front passing on Friday ushering in a nice shot of dry air for Friday night and Saturday. Saturday looks to be the better of the two weekend days as another front approaches.
