Long Island Heads Back to 80s Today Close to 90 Degrees Sunday

Week Ahead Outlook

The last 2 days on Long Island have seen the ocean wind keep temperatures much cooler than areas west and north of NYC. This changes today as the the winds gradually back around to the west and northwest. This is going to keep the ocean wind confined mainly to beach areas and perhaps the East End. With sunshine today and nothing more than some patchy clouds, temperatures should climb higher.

Assuming it is no worse than partly sunny today, low 80s should be reached in most of Nassau and Western Suffolk County away from the ocean. East and south of Riverhead highs will likely get into the 70s before the sea breeze cools things off. We are not considering any chance for a shower or thunderstorm today.

Sunday it is going to be a northwest wind and sunshine and that is a recipe for hot temperatures on Long Island. Even this time of year the cold ocean will have a tough time generating a sea breeze with a northwest flow ahead of a cold front moving south from upstate NY. Inland highs will make a run for 90 degrees and even at the beaches highs will be in the 80s before any sea breeze occurs and it will be confined to the beaches and not work their way inland.

We will watch for a late day scattered shower or thunderstorm otherwise a cold front passes and moves southward and a quick shot of cool air comes in for Monday and early Tuesday. As fast as high pressure moves south from Eastern Canada it moves out to the east later Monday. Look for sun and arriving clouds Monday with highs just reaching into the 70s

Tuesday will be day of waiting for a warm front to go by to our north so we will likely see cloudy to partly sunny conditions with highs in the low to mid 70s with 60s at the coast. Wednesday sets up to be another hot day on Long Island with a west or northwest wind and sunshine. Highs will reach the lower 90s and it could even be hotter next Wednesday than it will be Sunday. A late storm is possible Wednesday as a front passes and then another front with a better chance for storms is likely late Thursday.
