Joe’s Final Call Major Winter Storm Blizzard Warnings Delaware Coast to

Southeastern New England Coast Warnings Advisories Inland

The East Coast major winter storm is about to get underway and we have a long list of warnings and advisories from North Carolina to Maine. The highlight is of course the blizzard warning that covers coastal counties from the Delmarva Peninsula to the Coastal Counties of New Jersey to Suffolk County on Long Island and Southeastern New England. Winter storm warnings border those blizzard warnings inland from Massachusetts south to Eastern Virginia near the coast and further inland we have winter weather advisories.

During this afternoon and evening we have see the latest weather models change very little and have been consistent. The National  Weather Service snow forecast map above has seen little change since earlier Friday. Some areas have seen their numbers go up a little and some down a little but the vast majority of numbers remain the same.  We are not expecting too may surprises tonight and it is on to watching the satellite, radar and obersrvation. The time for forecasting is over and the time for nowcasting has begun.

WEATHER RADAR

Duriing Friday we saw patchy light snows move through with not much consequence but radars are now showing echos and bands of snow developing in New Jersey and points south and the coverage is increasing rather quickly. Steadier snow develops tonight and turns into heavy snow late tonight into Saturday.

Above we have the approximate start times for steady snow as it advances northeast an it will advance very quickly. Below we have the end times on Saturday once the storm reaches near or south of Cape Cod and then begins to pull away to the northeast.

End times are going to be dependent on how fast the storm moves out and how it interacts with a developing upper air storm off the New Jersey coast. This of course will effect final snow totals. Another variable to consider will be the temperatures Saturday morning and afternoon which will be dropping into the low 20s and even the teens. Snow ratios will increase to near 15 to 1 and that means you may have to add 20 to 30% to the numbers below as we compensate for the fluff factor.

JOE’S FINAL CALL SNOW FORECAST MAP

Inland is the toughest part of this forecast and that will be radar and observation dependent. How far west does the steady accumulating snow get? There will be a sharp cut off somewhere in Eastern Pennsylvania where you go from a few inches to zero. In the other direction you will go from 4 inches to 10 inches or more over 60 or 70 miles. Snow lovers you have been waiting for this so enjoy the snow.
