Better Air Quality Starts off the Weekend Showers Thunderstorms Late Monday

It was a nice change of pace this morning to now have to wake up to air quality alerts and dense smoke advisories. We have seen marked improvement since the dense smoke episode Wednesday and we should be able to hold on the better air quality conditions through the weekend. The upper low in the Northeast that has been there all week is weakening and moving away and we will see the flow go southwest as we move through the weekend. Today we will see sunshine and some passing clouds. There is the chance for a scattered shower or thunderstorm as the atmosphere is a touch unstable. Highs today will be in the upper 70s and lower 80s. All in all a good day.

Of course we will continue to monitor the smoke from wildfires in Northern Canada. There are new large plumes of smoke developing there and as the upper air pattern changes, we will see some of that smoke move southward and eventually eastward though timing of any one plume remains difficult. The southwest flow brings very warm air Sunday and look for highs reaching 85 to near 90 in some places with a fair amount of sunshine and no shower or thunderstorm activity is forecast. All the attention has been around the smoke lately and little over the fact that many areas especially across New Jersey and Pennsylvania are now getting unusually dry as rainfall has been sparse for the last month or so. We do have a cold front however that will be approaching Monday and that will give us the chance for developing showers and a few thunderstorms. We may have a shot of seeing anywhere from 3/4 inch to an inch of rain from this system as there is going to be some inflow from the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic. Expect showers and thunderstorms to develop Monday as the day wears on and high temperatures will be in the 70s. Next week weather systems will be moving along from west to east with some regularity so we won't be stuck in any one place for too long. Tuesday looks to be dry with some sunshine with highs in the 70s to around 80. Another cold front is likely to approach Wednesday with the chance for some showers though it doesn't look like anything of concern. Thursday and Friday look mostly dry with another weak front coming through late in the week. Temperatures this week will be on the cool side of average and highs Wednesday through Friday will likely be in the 70s to perhaps at best near 80.
