Flood Watches Delaware to Southern New England Including Philadelphia & NYC

Heavy Rains 2 to 3 Inches Saturday

We are setting up for a complete washout Saturday. Flood Watches are posted covering areas frmo Eastern Maryland and Delaware northeast to New Jersey, NYC, Long Island, Southern & Southeastern New England and surrounding areas. In addition well north in Upstate NY and New England we have various Winter Weather Advisories & Winter Storm Warnings posted for a heavy wet snowfall that is going to be elevation driven to some degree. Let's start with the rainfall forecast. We see a solid 2 to 3 inches of rain in the flood watch zone and I would not at all be surprised if we wind up with some places getting 4 inches or more. That should certainly create risks for street and highway flooding. The heaviest rain falls during the day Saturday as low pressure heads up the East Coast. Subtropical moisture is in the mix here which is why we are bullish regarding high amounts.

At least for today we have no weather issues to speak of. We will see sunshine at least into the afternoon as the satellite loop doesn't show clouds anywhere close at least for the morning hours. Temperatures today will be somewhat restricted due to the cold air mass that is still over head but highs should reach the mid to upper 40s which is higher than where we topped out Thursday. Wind will also be less of an issue today. Low pressure is moving across the Gulf of Mexico today and we are seeing the rain area with this system gradually expand across the Deep South, Southeast Coast, & Florida. The low turns up the East Coast and moves northward just barely offshore. An area of heavy rain develops on the west side of the low track and that brings heavy rain in that area from Delaware to Southeast New England. Areas in Upstate New York north of I-90 as well as Northern New England will be dealing with snow and we have widespread Winter Storm Warnings for Northern NY and Northern New England especially in Maine where many areas are going to see a foot plus of snow accumulation. It is still ski season so at least the skiers are happy if they drive far enough north. Back to the coast, rains will end from southwest to northeast late Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening. Temperatures Saturday will be in the 50s. The low continues to move away allowing high pressure to build in from Southeastern Canada Sunday. This sets us up for a day of sunshine with a gusty north northeast wind and highs will be generally in the upper 40s to around 50 degrees. As far as coastal flooding at times of high tide, there is the risk for some coastal flooding issues Saturday and they may actually continue Sunday and into next week. Even though we will be done with rain and Monday and Tuesday look to be dry, there will be a persistent onshore flow. Couple that with peak spring tides from the full moon and we could see issues at the coast lasting into Tuesday.
