Major Storm Plains Upper Midwest Means Nice Weather Here

Our weather here will be nice into Thursday which is in direct contrast to the Central & Northern Plains and the upper Midwest which will experience a major rain storm. The issue for the Central & Northern Plains is the deep snow cover that exists and now we have the potential of putting 2 inches or more of rain on top of this. The result could be significant flooding and runoff as everything is still frozen solid up there. Severe weather will break out on Tuesday in West Texas and shift eastward on Wednesday. While all that is going on well to the west, we are under high pressure which protects us at least into the daytime Thursday. Meanwhile notice on the loop of the GFS, high pressure holds along the East Coast into Thursday. As long as that high is there the western storm can't make eastward progress. Tuesday Wednesday and the daytime Thursday will be dry and nice most of the time. Temperatures are about where they should be for this time of year. Low to mid 40s will do it for Tuesday, upper 40s to lower 50s look likely for Wednesday and 50s in most places on Thursday.

The US satellite loop shows the beginnings of the Pacific tropical feed into the Plains and Rockies and the Gulf of Mexico will eventually open up and add to the moisture feast. This storm will start the process of breaking down the ridge in the east/trough in the west pattern and it will be in reverse this weekend and next week. If you are a snow lover that is your one window of opportunity for something wintry to happen and as we have been pointing out, it would have to be a near perfect set up to pull it off. Nothing of consequence happens through the weekend .

Driving the pattern is the off the wall positive Pacific North America pattern index which is telling us that the ridge in the west at least will be strong. It will get no help from the North Atlantic Oscillation index which is strongly positive. This means no blocking. That leaves a less than ideal East Pacific Osillation index or EPO which is only slightly negative. That might signal cold in the east but it probably isn't cold enough. The window is short and will last through much of next week before we see the pattern revert to a spring pattern across the US. Spring patterns to remind everyone is one of volatility and it is not beautiful 70s every day and birds chirping in the background!
