Severe Weather Risk Into Monday Morning Showers Thunderstorms Tonight

Severe Weather Risk Into Monday Morning Showers Thunderstorms Tonight

This has been a very active severe weather weekend so far across the Southern US with numerous tornadoes and damage from Texas to Alabama. Today the severe weathter threat shifts eastward and northward which includes our area from Eastern Pennsylvania to NYC the Hudson Valley and Western Long Island. Where there is the chance for some some downpours developing later this afternoon they should be confined to a small area in Eastern Pennsylvania and the main action will come later tonight into Monday morning as a cold front arrives and moves through. Until then today we sit in low clouds and patchy dense fog which will be slow to burn off today. Temperatures will reach the 60s except 50s along the immediate coast.

Looking at the satellite loop this morning we have low pressure spinning clouds around the Great Lakes and the trail of clouds that extends south to the Florida Panhandle. Thunderstorms across the south are firing up and we have working tornado watches with more tornado and severe thunderstorm watches likely later today. Those of you watching the Master’s Golf Tournament, note that it will be impacted by severe weather today.

REGIONAL RADAR

Regional radar shows showers appearing well to the west in Pennsylvania and Western NY moving northeastward. Local radars won’t be too busy today with some scattered showers around.

Tonight as the cold front swings eastward we will see an increasing chance for showers mainly after midnight with the main push of showers and thunderstorms late tonight into Monday morning. Rainfall amounts should be about an inch or so and there could be a little bit of upside in the forecast rainfall amounts.

This cold front will be pushing offshore taking thunderstorms to the east and weather conditions should start to improve later in the day on Monday as dry air starts to come in later Monday morning and afternoon. We should see some sunshine break through the clouds later in the day on Monday along with a gusty northwest wind developing and temperatures in the 60s to near 70.

Next week looks problematic with Tuesday being the least complicated day with some sunshine and arriving clouds along with cool temperatures in the upper 50s and lower 60s. The next storm will be taking shape out in the Plains and it will be making a slow move to the east. We are going to be stuck near a frontal boundary which means we will be battling clouds and the chance for some showers beginning Tuesday night and lasting into Thursday until the front moves northward. It looks like another widespread severe weather threat is headed for the Deep South
