Heavy Rain Evening Commute Windy Cold Saturday

FLASH FLOOD WATCH CONTINUES INTO TONIGHT

HEAVY RAINS 1 TO 2 INCHES LOCALLY HIGHER

COLD WEEKEND HARD FREEZE SUNDAY MORNING IN MANY AREAS

Watching the satellite and radars this afternoon we can see all the moisture to the west moving rapidly eastward and rain which is now building to the west in Pennsylvania will be moving in just in time for the evening commute. Radars are loaded and this is going to make for a very wet evening commute. The heaviest rain will fall between 5 and 10 pm with it lasting a little bit longer on Long Island and Connecticut before it moves away to the northeast,

The NAM model above is for 8pm tonight with the heaviest rains right over New Jersey & New York City northward into the Hudson Valley. Fortunately this system is moving very quickly so the heavy rains will come in and out fast; about 6 hours worth. Rainfall amounts could approach 2 inches in some places and don’t rule out a thunderstorm in the mix as well.

Skies will clear out late tonight and that sets us up for a rather cold weekend around here. Saturday will be on the windy side with ineffective sunshine. Cold air will be coming and temperatures will settle in the low to mid 40s. That sets us up for a very cold night Saturday night into Sunday morning. Look for freeze warnings to go up in many areas that have not seen a hard freeze yet. Sunday morning lows will be in the mid 20s to lower 30s just about everywhere.

Sunday will be mostly sunny and cold but with less wind. Highs will just be in the low to mid 40s. We will remain dry through Monday with sunshine giving way to arriving clouds and highs in the upper 40s to some lower 50s. Then we get ready for the next storm system moving up the East Coast for Monday night and Tuesday.

This cold front tonight stalls out across the Gulf States while the next shot of cold air comes down from Canada. This will force a low to develop on the front and then run northeastward through the Carolinas and pass offshore during Tuesday. A cold rain will develop later Monday night and by Tuesday morning it will be raining everywhere.

Cold air won’t be able to hold in so this is a rain event with snow in upstate NY & in Western Pennsylvania especially in elevated areas. Tuesday’s temperatures will just be in the 40s. The system will go by with rains coming to an end later Wednesday afternoon and evening. This could be another round of 3/4 inch to 1 1/2 inches of rain. Once the storm goes by another round of cold weather moves in for Wednesday and Thursday.
