Backdoor Front Woes This Weekend

Nothing is more annoying than a backdoor front in the spring. They turn warm nice days into raw clammy days with rain and drizzle. Such is the case this weekend. A warm front is now moving through and we have seen some showers. Earlier today a few spots saw some sleet but now the warmer air is dislodging the cold air mass of the last few days. The shower activity has moved away to the east and some breaks in the cloud cover will occur tonight. Temperatures won’t be dropping far tonight and probably holding in the 40s which sets us up for a warm Saturday in most but not all areas.

The problem Saturday is the timing of the backdoor cold front. Winds will shift to the northeast late morning across the Hudson Valley and early in the afternoon across Northeastern Pennsylvania, Northern New Jersey and Long Island and then the front will work its way south through New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Once the wind turns to the northeast temperatures will start to fall. Clouds and the marine layer will roll in as well which sets us up for a very chilly raw day on Sunday.

BACKDOOR FRONT SUNDAY’S FORECAST HIGHS

I’m thinking that the front makes it further south than advertised which might mean temperatures across Southern New Jersey and Southeast Pennsylvania may be lower than forecast. There will be light rain and drizzle from time to time especially along the coast but I don’t think it washes out the entire day.

Low pressure from the Midwest will be trying to push the front back northward Sunday night and Monday but how much success it has remains to be seen. Showers are likely Sunday night as well as later on Monday. Yet another low heads our way from the Ohio Valley on Tuesday with rain likely. Sunshine is going to return with dry weather on Wednesday of next week.
