winter storm warnings

The National Weather Service has issued Winter Storm Warnings for a large area from Maryland to New England with a Blizzard Watch continuing for New York City Long Island Coastal Connecticut Southern Rhode Island and Southeastern Massachusetts. Coastal Flood Watches are posted for the shores in and around Long Island and New York City. Afternoon weather models remain on course for a major winter storm that should produce about a foot of snow on average in most places. Some spots could see accumulations a little higher and along some coastal areas some places may see accumulations a bit lower. However I think the best way to approach this is that average amounts will reach a foot in most places except for Coastal Central and Southern New Jersey where amounts could be lower.

We continue to play this game with weather models all day long with some jogging east and colder and others jogging west and a bit warmer. In the end even the warmer western tracks don’t impact accumulations that significantly even in coastal areas. With the storm track offshore once the low pulls far enough away from the coast cold air will collapse back in. If mixing or a change to rain occurs the best chances for that would be Eastern Long Island and Coastal New Jersey and that should only last a few hours. There are no changes in the timetable from earlier. Snow develops across Southern Pennsylvania and New Jersey in the late evening, reaching NYC by midnight or 1am..and then reaching Boston by 7-8am Tuesday. The heaviest snows will come quickly and snows should taper off later Thursday afternoon and early evening from southwest to northeast. Snow should pull out of NYC by 5 or 6pm and around 8pm on Long Island. National Weather Service snow forecasts maps are all updated.
