Snow Possible Late Saturday
Snow Possible Late Saturday
At this point we can at least determine that the signature of this winter so far seems to be volatility. We have been at this for the last 6 weeks or so where we seem to be going from the deep freeze to the 50s and even the 60s and than back down again. Such is the case right now as we have been below freezing for the last 5 days. That is coming to an end tonight as temperatures are rising. We have the first of 3 weather fronts coming through. The first tonight will pass through by morning and Wednesday looks like we will see some sunshine and highs in the upper 40s to lower 50s. A second front comes through Wednesday night with some showers and behind that we will be even warmer Thursday with highs in the 60s. The a cold front comes through Thursday night and down we go on Friday. This is going to set us up for the possibility for some snow later Saturday into Saturday night.
GFS UPPER AIR FORECAST CLICK TO ANIMATE
This upper air pattern is not especially cold at least at 18,000 feet. Watch the system in Eastern Canada as it rotates through. This brings a strong high across the midwest and northeast on Saturday. In spite of the warm looking upper air, the bottom part of the atmosphere will be cold. This also creates a boundary of cold verses warm air across the Tennessee Valley and Middle Atlantic states. All that needs to happen is for a little wave to develop on that boundary which is what the European and GFS weather models have been doing for almost a week and they continue to remain consistent with this idea
This would suggest snow would develop here during later Saturday afternoon and continue into early Sunday morning. There is no strong system aloft here so the support is limited but there is a decent field of overrunning (warm air over cold air) so we think that a light to moderate event is possible for areas from Eastern Pennsylvania to the coast.
GFS SNOW FORECAST SATURDAY NIGHT INTO SUNDAY MORNING
I also believe that this could be another case where the heaviest snow falls more to the south than to the north. This looks to have the potential for a 1-3/2-4 inch event at the moment. Should overnight models continue this trend, I will be putting out and early call snow forecast on Wednesday.
