Freezing Rain Tonight Inland & West
Winter Weather Advisory is up for freezing rain and freezing drizzle tonight in the areas on the map in blue.
The first of two weather systems approach us tonight. Along the coast there are no icing issues at all with temperatures chilly and in the 30s but above freezing. Inland however it will be a different story as temperatures will drop to below 32 in some areas between midnight and 8am on Saturday. Freezing rain will fall after midnight into sunrise Saturday. Ice accumulation should be under a tenth of an inch. If you are travelling tonight in areas where there is a Winter Weather Advisory, exercise caution when driving. Once temperatures rise above 32 tomorrow morning the freezing rain issue will be done.
Satellite loops show a large amount of clouds covering most of the eastern half of the United States. The first storm system is lifting up well to the west.
The radar loop shows rain approaching from the southwest but the eastern portion of this rain area remains weak and spotty. I don’t believe this is going to create a widespread problem but it will make conditions tricky overnight in areas where temperatures fall below 32.
During Saturday temperatures will be warming up slowly through the 40s and rain if any will be on the spotty side. It is well after midnight Saturday night until Sunday afternoon that the second storm will be developing and tracking northeast into Western New York State. There should be a large area of rain and heavy downpours and I continue to forecast a generous 1 to 2 inches of rain for the entire area from Eastern Pennsylvania through Southern New England and Long Island. The National Weather Service forecast for rainfall I think might be underdoing the rain a bit. Temperatures could rise briefly into the 60s in many areas before the cold front passes to the east.
Once the rain ends on Sunday it will turn much colder Monday and Tuesday. Tuesday we will see low pressure approaching and this could produce a period of snow late Tuesday and Tuesday night. My latest video on the GFS weather model addresses this and other long term developments.
