Hurricane Joaquin continues has begun to strengthen again as the eye is become very well defined and pressures are dropping again by about one millibar per hour so it is once again a Category 4 Hurricane with max winds at 130 mph.

Take a look at the loop above and look to the east northeast of the hurricane and you can see a low level circulation there with thunderstorms curling around the center. This is likely to be the remnants of Tropical Storm Ida and it certainly looks like it is trying to develop today. I point this out because this is the reason why Hurricane Joaquin did not get caught in the trough along the east coast. The other reason is that by developing into a very deep system, it was able to maintain a separate identity. A shallower system would probably have been absorbed by the trough along the east coast in the strong southerly flow. Hurricane Joaquin is likely to be a category 4 hurricane when it passes at it’s closest point to Bermuda.
